Do charities take toys in good condition?

We've been busy clearing out our son's room (with his somewhat reluctant co-operation) and have agreed on a number of books and toys to "donate" to children who are less fortunate. Many charity shops and nurseries/playschools seem reluctant to accept toys for helath and safety reasons (apparently). I see Oxfam take toys (on their website) but they only have drop off points for books and clothes. Any thoughts? It seems such a waste for some really nice stuff to just be dumped.
