Windbreak poles on hard standing!

Not sure if it is us getting older, but we are finding that on many CC sites the hard standing is really hard and even bends good quality rock pegs.  As for erecting a windbreak no chance of driving the poles into the ground.

It has been suggested that another option is to drill a hole into the hard standing and then to shove the pole into it giving the pole a few taps to secure the pole.  If we were to do this, what sort of drill bit would you recommend?  Would a masonry bit be effective or perhaps some other bit?  We have a 18v Makita drill.  Thanks.
