UK sites with metered electricity

Can people please post some examples of UK sites where electricity.usage is metered.

The one I know of is Pier Collage on the waterside at Coniston - a family owned site with 15 pitches . The system there is to pay on departure for the amount of electricity used, but other sites sell pre paid cards on arrival, so comments on the different ways of working may be helpful.

Likes and dislikes will inevitably crop up - they always do on here - but I was rather looking for practical ways of working.

Note how a Cl owner had to upgrade to keep in business.

CS That is just one CL owner's way of looking at it, there are many other CLs out there that have not had to upgrade to remains in business, as we find plenty that are full or nearly so when we visit.

Excellent more choice all round. Still I found it interesting that they had to do it for whatever reason.

Agree.     They will probably capture those who would otherwise need a facilities block.    Having to fetch water for a family can be a bit  of a chore.  No problem when just the 2 of us.

But the main question is did that site have to install meters from scratch or did they convert existing EHU points? You appear to know the history?

The main point that people who advocate meters never answer is where will the money come from to convert a very rough low estimate of 10,000 current EHU on club sites. At what cost per pitch? £1 per pitch would be too low of course, £10? Still far too low I think but there's £100,000. £20...

You can do the sums yourself. So the question is where will this money come from? The club can only get it back from higher pitch fees? And to ensure that maybe there would be no option to not have it? Or it could use it's reserves and then not do any refurbishments, more pitches or buy new sites?

So over to you?

the club could stop spending money on glamping pods, lodges  or converting pitches to fully serviced to fund meters being installed.

Poole farm CL uses meters whereby anything  more than 15units/day over your stay is payable. 3 weeks in April added about £20 to the stay (generous use of the Alde heating) 3 weeks in September with no additional charge.

I put this in the CL thread but it really belongs here:-

Did you read the implied costs there PD at all?

The installation costs look to be around £1K for a CL

I'm sure you do do the sum and work out the cost for all the club's 10,000 pitches? I get £2 million pounds.

even ignoring the opportunity to implement changes when sites are being upgraded/refurbished.

I think that is just a non starter, you can't have one site on meters, or part of a site on meters, and the rest not in my view?

I think you will just have to accept that the club isn't going to install meters no matter how many times you post about it.

I’m not particularly keen on the idea of meters, however if when a site was refurbished part or all of the meters were due for replacement anyway, the costs would be reduced. I would also expect some reduction for scale.

I also don’t see why one site couldn’t be metered, whilst the others continue as they are. Clearly there would be a price difference, as there are between different sites now. If we are going down the line of surface type booking, it would even be possible to do part of the site. You could either book a site with a meter or a standard EHU pitch. Again there would be a price difference.

Maybe sites should have metered pitches for EV tow vehicles, seen a few this year with a sneaky power lead going under the caravan!!

With regards to your first paragraph, I am glad to see the club being pro-active and forward thinking with the provision of static accommodation. It’s clear the days of decent tow cars and MHs are numbered unless technology makes huge strides so the static accommodation could well be the future which enables the club to keep going.

There seems to currently be a demand for serviced pitches and if installed during a refurbishment, the additional cost to the club would be minimal and I suggest the returns on that outlay would quickly outstrip the cost involved.

The cost of installing metered hook ups has been declared by the club to be massive and it’s not just installation that has to be paid for but ongoing maintenance and operational outgoings. Then there are the legal implications and the rigmarole of complying - every hour spent filling in forms adds to staff costs and reflects on the end user, that’s you and I. The input required from a 5 van site such as Poole or CG is but a spot in the ocean compared with each club site, let alone the network as a whole.

There are add charges for hi brid and eV vehicles that must be charged via the LV and not direct from the EHU mwhen they advise the site staff they are charging said vehicles.undecided
