We are due to travel to Cromer from Derby next Sunday (20th Aug) and my husband & I are discussing the best route as we don't really know the roads that side of the country. At the moment we are looking at A52 to Grantham, A1 to Peterborough, A47 to Kings Lynn and then A148. Are there any better routes? We are towing an ~8m caravan. Thanks for any advice.

Obviously not from the north but we have used the route from Peterborough. It can be a bit slow on the Peterborough to Kings Lynn because a lot is two way traffic but the road is fine. Depending on time of day the Kings Lynn bypass can get a build up of traffic. When you get towards Cromer you have two choices, either go into Cromer and turn left just after the railway station to the coast road where you turn left again and the site is a few minutes along this road. Or, the route we prefer is the A1082 down to Sheringham and at the bottom of the hill turn right at the roundabout to join the coast road from the other direction. I only drive a motorhome so probably easier than a large caravan? Always have a look at the route on Google Maps and you can always drop the Street View symbol onto any section of road you are not sure of.

We’re caravanners also from Derbyshire we’ve been to Cromer a couple of times and always go the following route it is very straightforward and very flat.

A38 towards kings mill , then A617,  then onto A17 , then take the A148 site on right just before Cromer.

Thanks for this, at least we know that the roads from Peterborough to Cromer should be OK - I'm not a very good passenger when husband tows cool.

Thanks for this - we live south Derby, so would be out of the way to go North to Mansfield. We could go along the A52 to where it meets the A17, but I'm not sure if the A52 is a good towing road. Good to be in contact with other Derbyshire caravanners!

Nothing wrong with A52. We travel across from North Wales once a year, at least, and probably done most routes whilst towing in last 30 years.

The only  "problem" you may have is getting through Grantham. We head south on A1 just near Grantham itself and take first exit for Grantham. Right at mini roundabout then left at T unction and right at Traffic Lights. Follow road which takes you out of town after main TL with McD's on one corner. A52 takes you eventually to A17. Easy road to tow on.

Presume you would have no problem following A50 from Derby and ring road around Nottingham passing the university to head on out towards Grantham. There's no towing problems on that road for towing either.

Great - thanks for this & the tip about Grantham. I think that we will probably go this route. No problem getting to Grantham, we bought our van from Lowdhams, which is on the way. Cheers, Rachel
