Tewkesbury Abbey

We have used Tewkesbury Abbey for 4 years now as a stopover to break the journey between our home in Northumberland, and our annual "must do" holiday destination - Cornwall.

Last year we stayed for 2 nights on the journey down to Cornwall and 3 nights on the way back. The turnover of vans and motor homes on pitches would suggest that a lot of other people also just use this site as a stopover, but really that is a shame - because it deserves better!

The site is mostly level but some pitches have gentle inclines which are easily compensated for. All pitches seem to be on grass - we haven’t spotted any hard standing ones. Pets are allowed and there is a doggie walk just outside the site.

The site is right next to the Abbey in the heart of town. This means of course that all of the shops, pubs, restaurants and takeaways etc are within easy walking distance (or an extremely short drive!).

Facilities are well kept - up to the usual Caravan Club standards, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Showers can get very busy at certain times, in common with many other sites. Although there are quite a few trees, most pitches allow you to get a clean shot at the Sky satellite! Vodafone Dongles work at GPRS level (acceptable) and there is a Wetherspoons pub across the road from the site which offers free WiFi.

Tewkesbury does have supermarkets - Morrisons is only a couple of miles away. However Mrs Bugs, the family shopper, particularly liked Tewkesbury Town Centre as the streets are full of “old fashioned” small shops - the way the world used to be!! For anyone who also has a passion for boats (like me!!) there is an inland marina within walking distance of the site where you can lose yourself for an hour or two.

Many of the buildings in the town centre are of the “olde worlde” type which adds to the atmosphere. They have a medieval fayre in early July which is worth considering.

You can set your watch by the Abbey chimes, and the bell ringers in the Abbey practice once or twice per week - but they are very good!!

The site was flooded during Tewkesbury’s floods of 2008.

We enjoy ourselves so much when we go to this site that it has finally dawned on us that we should perhaps spend a little longer there next time. A week would be just about right…..

Anyway, in summary - a very nice site in an excellent location with almost everything you should need within walking distance.
