Number plate recognition to replace wardens

Whilst staying at the beautiful Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan Club Site in the Cotswolds I have been made aware that number plate recognition is being trialed there with a view to REPLACING the wardens. I'm not happy with this idea as I feel that Wardens do a necessary job. I'm concerned about the security and cleanliness of the site suffering. What do other members think?

I’m sort of having a bit of a problem getting my head around being locked in, or locked out of a Site at certain times to be honest. I fully respect the need for quiet around others, but in the past we have had some very late nights while away, and we have got up really early to catch ferries etc……

The ferry pitches at Rookesbury are outside the barrier, don’t know about others. Some sites we have stoped on abroad have locked the barrier at 10 pm and you have to park outside. I don’t have any issue with that. It normally reopens at 7am. If you want to set off off early to visit something you can park outside. Obviously if you want to leave with your camping unit, you can’t. Again I don’t have an issue with that, it is quite early enough for folk to be up and about making a noise. Even if you are very careful with everything else a large Diesel engine isn’t that quiet on a still morning.

Quite a few sites including C&CC operate a "no movement " policy between certain hours. I think it says in the APNR faqs that arrivals can be electronically controlled and set.

One of our favourite sites aboard has quiet time between 1100 and 0700.  During that time the ANPR barriers remain closed; cycle and pedestrian access is not restricted.  If you are out late you can park in the large car park; nobody seems to mind.

I am struggling to understand how ANPR cameras cut the grass and clean the toilets……😉. I get the problem of recruitment however I still cannot see how the sites can operate without in-person check-in or human beings to carry out site daily/weekly/annual maintenance and cleaning. I am not aware of any trials of robots for those tasks. However it is very simple in my book - if you don’t like the service on offer, go somewhere else. No one is forced to use any club site.

Saw a very positive review on Facebook of the automatic arrival at the Clachan Club Site using ANPR. Before the automatic barriers it was a bit of a faff arriving at the site because you used to have to check in at the other Club site down the road, now you don't.

Yes, saw that too. Automatic admission will also be useful on the single manager sites were some need to have their time off.

I have used Camping Car-Park locations in France on many occasions, some of them being ex municipal campsites - known as Camping de mon village like the one pictured below - which also have facilities blocks.

None of them are manned and you gain entry/exit through a barrier with the grounds being maintained under contract by local landscaping contractors and cleaners.

Each site has a card reader to control the barrier and there is a credit card type machine to dispense new cards to those people who do not already have a card from a previous visit to one of the sites in the network.

You can either pre-load your card with credit or load it with funds prior to departure, on-line or via the on-site machine.  All sites have CCTV supervision and a help button which is manned 24/7 so you can contact a human being to resolve any issues.

Typically the maximum price charged in high season is €12.40 + tourist tax and that includes electric, all services and free wi-fi on most sites.

I like this model and would be quite happy to see it adopted more widely by the Club.
