Odd request- looking for a rural CL or site who can rent me space for 18 pet chickens!  I'll be living in my new caravan for a few months when my house sale completes (due for end September) whilst I search for a new house with land around the Midlands to South Yorks areas. I have 18 pet chickens who'll also need a temporary home, so I wondered whether any farm CL or rural sites have a piece of land I could rent whilst camping there? I have my own Green Frog plastic coops, and can set up electric fencing around them, I do have 3 young cockerels so crowing shouldn't be an issue. Any ideas welcome.

Hi TravelNut.

I can't offer any assistance regarding an actual CL but you state that you'll be living in your van for a few months so you need to be aware that the maximum stay permitted on a CL is 28 days before you must move on.

Good luck in your search.

If I was you, I would get looking at area you fancy moving to, have a word with any farmers who might be interested in renting you space for van and chooks, and take it from there. Lots of farms have vans on them for one reason or another. We actually bought a van that had been on a farm for eight years, with owner periodically working oversees. Make sure you do some basic safety checking, you don’t want to be alongside seasonal workers for instance, but it’s surprising how accommodating and flexible farmers are when looking for help. No idea how much rent you might be expected to pay, and of course you will have to think carefully about security for your chooks, even urban areas have foxes!

We rescued and kept chickens and ducks for years, endearing and fascinating creatures, hope things go well for you👍

Just remembered this one which is closer to the area you're interested in. It was a rather run down though pleasant enough CL when we stayed there several years ago and they've obviously invested a lot in upgrading it. I seem to remember there was quite a bit of land attached either at the site or nearby in the village.

Why not find a smallholder with a secure area for your chickens who'd be willing to look after them whilst you site yourself somewhere? When we had chickens and moved house quite frequently we tended to re-home them and then restock if living somewhere suitable. It would make it much easier for you to move around to different sites during your home searches if needed.

I'm sure the chickens would be able to coop for a night or two whilst TravelNut complied with this restriction.

Well that's cheered me up on a damp grey morning! smile

Try this, not exactly handy for the Midlands or South Yorkshire but good for the birds!

Brilliant, thank you so much for the link, I'm not so crazy then; hoping for a campsite for the caravan and the chickens :–)
