Holidaying in Scotland

(Moved from Introductions)

My wife and I are wanting to take the caravan to Scotland for two or three weeks next year. Never been any further than Edinburgh before! However, having heard the horrendous tales about the midges, and being a magnet for biting things wherever I go, I was wondering if there was a particular time to avoid or, obversely, a good time to go when the weather is likely to be pleasant in an effort to miss the midges?  Also, does anyone have suggestions for a circular route around Scotland and places we should or shouldn't visit? First time I have posted so apologies if this is too long winded.
