Gone - but not forgotten!

Coming down The Rest-and-be-Thankful this week I recalled that there was once a Club site at Ardgarten. It got me wondering about other "lost" sites and the memories people had of them.  What are YOUR memmories?

Do I remember correctly that there was once a Blackpool North site?

It can only be a matter of time before the CC sell off their sites. We've already seen clear evidence of them attempting to do so.

They don't seem to be terribly good at running them efficiently (constantly hiking prices / extending peak periods, taking forever to carry out minor improvements, giving confusing messages to their site managers and leaving them incapable of managing their sites affectively.....etc).

I'd say that within 5 to 10 years the CC will simply be agents for commercial site operators......the first signs of this are here already, with their promotion of certain commercial site chains.

A few years ago I believe there was mention of building a new site at Prestwold Park near Loughborough. What happened to the plans for that?

I think they decided it wasnt cost effective. Shame though - we were looking forward to having a club site in that area.

I agree Ian - the AS sites paying to be included in the CC listings is not a good omen. The club sites will just become franchised out to the highest bidder.

Hemel Hempstead (Breakspear Way) was also very vunerable to "problems" from the other frateranty,   The council who owened it were in the process of arrangeing to open a new site on , i think, a big new sports complex, with the cc given the lease,  but the whole thing fell through because of access and local opposition

It's been quite illuminating seeing all the closed sites from the past.

The acquisition of new sites does not seem to have kept pace

Not seen this 'evidence' any details?

There was a long running thread earlier this year, when JayEss and others spotted that the CC had put forward at least three of their prime sites for redevelopment for housing.

A very lame response was given by CC management, saying it was all a big mistake.......honest.

They then consistenly refused to answer members' questions on the subject.

..I think it was the Scare when a firm of estate agents thought it might make money in some councils "local plans"

It was a lovely ste at Ardgarten. On the river side with views down the loch. We used it a lot and the only one in that area. Noticed it closed and went into disrepair. The CC & C had a site on theother side of the river. No idea why it closed.

They were a heck of a place for midges and ticks in the forest too. They closed as they were going to start up an adventure centre in the youth hostel(?). However it is now posh Cabin site run by Forest Holidays.
