CC sites versus French sites

Some people hold up CC sites as the 'gold standard' of sites, others say that French sites are far superior.

Having just returned from a couple of weeks touring France (well, a bit of it - between Calais and La Rochelle) we stayed on 7 sites and here are my initial thoughts -

Firstly, French sites are much cheaper - average was less than £14 per night. By comparison, our ferry pitch at Folkestone was £18.30 and most are more than that.

Pitch size - the French ones appear quite big, but they are generally 'pitch to pitch', maybe with a hedge between them (like Rowntree) - so they don't have the 'no-man's land' in between, so I'd say in general, CC give you more room.

Contrary to common myth, we only found one site with free wifi - on all others we had to pay (and a daily rate is far more expensive than £25/year).

The electric supply in France was as little as 5 amps, but this didn't cause us any problems.

Toilet facilities in France were always very clean (often cleaned twice each day) but often male / female shared facilities and they had some strange toilets without seats. Toilet paper often not provided in France. I think the standard of facilities on CC sites is very good, but maybe could do with more cleaning (unfortunately, this is the members' fault!).

We only saw grass pitches in France - a problem when it rains. The CC offer mostly H/S on many sites.

In France, you have access to good, cheap wine!
