Vacation V Staycation Costs

We sadly accepted a while back that our hoped for trip abroad, in May/June, would not be happening and have booked on a two week rally in June-which we are very much looking forward to.

Over the last couple of days I have been looking at options for July/August and wondered how prices compare.

Normally we would go abroad at the times I mention so never look to see how over there compares with here.

Anyway, just looked at the price for a 10 day stay at sites of similar levels of quality and facilities, one in Cornwall and one in the Vendee.

The price for Cornwall, at Pentewan Sands, is £498.10.

The price for France at La Yole via the club and including a BF overnight crossing with cabin is £488.36

We don't go 'over there' to save money but its another example to show that considering 'going' as opposed to 'staying' need not cost a lot more.

ExcellentšŸ‘šŸ»-for you. I get there quick & explore/enjoy on foot, I know where Iā€™m going, I know what Iā€™m interested in, I know my agenda. Iā€™m not one for the whole aimless gigšŸ˜Š

"Much is made of the covid guarantee. However, I bet they don’t cover you if your flight / holiday is going ahead but we still require quarantine on return. I wonder how many have considered that."

That is a very good point Steve, and one which has already occurred to us. Our planned holiday in Greece is not until September and things may well have changed considerably before then. But if there is any possibility of the current quarantine/testing arrangements still being in place we've already decide we'll cancel and take the hit of losing our deposit. But fingers crossed all the same!

I don't think that anyone would say that driving any distance on British roads is "part of the holiday" whereas driving abroad the roads are quieter, the views/villages/shops etc are all totally different from here. Even driving on the wrong side of the road is a novelty.

As others have said the holiday begins as soon as you arrive at the ferry terminal.

I was reading the TUI booking conditions only yesterday and one of the promises made is that  Yesyou are able to change your planned holiday if quarantining would be required on return.

Unfortunately I donā€™t think any of us will be getting there as quickly as before.ā˜¹ļø Additional paperwork / checks at airports and ferry terminals. Including of course the fridge inspection.

Lots of reports of advanced bookings for June and even the prospect of using larger aircraft due to the numbers. Much is made of the covid guarantee. However, I bet they donā€™t cover you if your flight / holiday is going ahead but we still require quarantine on return. I wonder how many have considered that.

I agree SL I’m afraidā˜¹ļø, most countries in Euroland are increasing in covid cases which will inevitably slow their eventual opening up to allow us all to visit. The loss of freedom is bad but is far outweighed by the loss of life. It may become a 2022 holiday that will be booked.

Thats a very good price for 10 days at La Yole plus an overnight BF crossing with cabin...You should grab their hand off !!! My Portsmouth to St Malo overnight with cabin is more than £488.00.

Not exactly like for like though..the pitches the club allocate at La Yole can be 'small' .... I know I booked via the club en route back from south and refused the pitch..choosing to upgrade to one further back, nearer some friends we called in on...also you do need to add insurance....say £200.

I am sure the camping/holiday world is split between those that need an exact itinerary and those who are more free spirits. I suppose the thought of touring ad hoc for a couple of months just wouldn'd suit some people. Probably a hangover from the British way of doing things where you book everything a year ahead which leaves little room for improvisation. It is wrong to suggest that people who "tour" don't have a plan but more often than not they have a loose plan which allows a lot of freedom along the way. So bad weather in the Loire means it's only a day away from sunshine in the Dordogne and if that turns wet you are only a day away from the Med. No need to worry about booking out of season.

That's encouraging, although it's not TUI we're going with. The other problem, for us at least, is that this holiday has already been carried over from 2020 and I believe it's not likely that we'd be able to amend it again without cost as we did last year.  Just have to wait and see, Greece will still be there in 2022!  wink

Our tour of 10/11 weeks gives us a little more freedom to tour without an itinerary, we have a rough idea of the countries we would like to visit but even that can change on route. In 2019 we were in Austria and leaving site the next day to what was supposed to be Slovenia, but because of bad weather forecast we took a right turn at Villach and headed to Grado on Italy's Adriatic coast where it was much better, we returned to Slovenia after 5 days of sunshine. It's this freedom of travel and short term changes that adds to our enjoyment. Not for everyone but good for us, and I love driving and avoid motorways preferring the more scenic routes, although busiersmile

Costs ..... never entered my head money-mouthlaughing

Not the driving up the hateful M6 perhaps but the journey can be part of the holiday in this country if you get off the major roads and meander a bit. It's what you make it and, admittedly, much easier to detour via an attractive spot for a lunch break with a MH than a caravan.

My recent holidays have begun long before I reached the ferry portsšŸ‘
