Vacation V Staycation Costs

We sadly accepted a while back that our hoped for trip abroad, in May/June, would not be happening and have booked on a two week rally in June-which we are very much looking forward to.

Over the last couple of days I have been looking at options for July/August and wondered how prices compare.

Normally we would go abroad at the times I mention so never look to see how over there compares with here.

Anyway, just looked at the price for a 10 day stay at sites of similar levels of quality and facilities, one in Cornwall and one in the Vendee.

The price for Cornwall, at Pentewan Sands, is £498.10.

The price for France at La Yole via the club and including a BF overnight crossing with cabin is £488.36

We don't go 'over there' to save money but its another example to show that considering 'going' as opposed to 'staying' need not cost a lot more.

Deleted User User I feel for you, not sure that being closer in miles is better or worse!

Brue thank you but it's something we've had to come to terms with. Makes us chuckle as our daughter didn't take her place at Christchurch Canterbury - too far from home 🤔😂😢. Stayed at home and went to Essex Uni, now I thank God for those extra years. But she wouldn't have met her husband if she'd gone to Kent 🤫

Heddlo I hate flying full stop - but at the moment I'd jump on the plane. Not sure that it will happen again as highly likely OH won't be allowed to. Could be more shorter hops, but that prolongs the flying and adds to the cost 🤣.  It was 2018 when we last made the trip. Now the grandchildren are at school, youngest starts in June, they could only do winter here trips. UK in December January is such an enticing destination 😉. Maybe a halfway meet up. I completely understand where you are coming from.

Our local grandchild, well 70 miles away, is due very soon and I thought I'd be able to watch it grow from the inside 😱 unlike the kiwi ones, but that hasn't been possible. Fingers crossed we can visit when it arrives, even if its only to stand and stare!

All I can say is thanks for modern tech stuff, my grandad's sister emigrated to Canada in the early years of 1900's and things drifted. We are slow starters in our family - 3 of my grandparents were all born in the 1890's but that grandfather 1870's!

Sorry for the thread drift.

Hopefully all those with families living abroad, the travel corridors will open up again, at present it's reverted back to the days our ancestors endured!

AnotherDavid, I hope it won't be too long before you can see your daughter again.

Thanks for that. Have had very good news today  that on the 3rd attempt she has been vaccinated.  I am now going to see her soon even though the it will be one of those PPE visits that I have avoided  until now.

That's wonderful. PPE or not something to look forward to.

Great news David!

We took our eldest daughter  for her jab yesterday, she has no transport and has been feeling quite isolated, and excited as she was I think the fact we came home via M&S food hall was perhaps the highlight!

We cant wait to see our grandchildren, one spent the whole of lock down 1 with us, he was here before is started, but some we have not seen, in the flesh since Boxing Day 2019.

So with them in Northampton, eldest Granddaughter in Manchester and eldest Grandson in London we will likely spend the summer on family visits.

Given the escalation on the continent, I can see domestic restrictions ending in June but not necessarily overseas ones. Introducing this £5k fine legislation just for a matter of months hardly seems worth the admin. We aren't going anywhere 'over there' anytime soon. Equally if activities on the continent are seriously restricted due to Covid, would we want to go anyway?

CY, for us its best summed up by "comfortable".

If the factors which need to be met for us to even consider over there-its legal, we are allowed in and no quarantine, at either end-it would still be a case of "OK, will we be comfortable when we get there"?

I think social distancing is somewhat ingrained now and, for that reason, our original destination, Lago Trasimeno, is out as this was to enable visits to lovely old Italian hill towns, you know, the ones with very narrow streets and crowds of people!

Face masks indoors I think will be expected for some time to come but if it was a requirement elsewhere, as has been widely seen, we would give it a miss, as you say, who would want to go anyway?
