Vacation V Staycation Costs

We sadly accepted a while back that our hoped for trip abroad, in May/June, would not be happening and have booked on a two week rally in June-which we are very much looking forward to.

Over the last couple of days I have been looking at options for July/August and wondered how prices compare.

Normally we would go abroad at the times I mention so never look to see how over there compares with here.

Anyway, just looked at the price for a 10 day stay at sites of similar levels of quality and facilities, one in Cornwall and one in the Vendee.

The price for Cornwall, at Pentewan Sands, is £498.10.

The price for France at La Yole via the club and including a BF overnight crossing with cabin is £488.36

We don't go 'over there' to save money but its another example to show that considering 'going' as opposed to 'staying' need not cost a lot more.

Hi David, Another comparison I have made, more in hope than expectation, is between Caribbean and European all inclusive resorts.

The main reason is that the thought of a 10 hour flight, mask on, is not that appealing however, as I suspected, having discussed this with 'travel advisors' , you get far more for your money in the Caribbean.

Looking at October its £2286 for a Greek 5 star AI, at an Ikos resort, and  the Dominican Republic is £1612 at, what  I am told is, a comparable hotel, both are top rated on Trip advisor and we have stayed at the DR hotel.

Did look at Tenerife, for some reason my wife wants to try it, I was told that there are really no directly comparable hotels-it was impossible, back in 2018, to find a hotel that would guarantee a walk in shower as most were still the 'over the bath' type!.

I have not made a comparison with a trip with the van, maybe Spain would still be OK weather wise, but if I went direct with BF the fare alone would be quite a chunk of the £1612 gone so likely to be far more, overall and while I am a whizz on the BBQ, and wash up, its not quite the same relaxing stress free holiday that the AI would be when the only decisions you have is which of the many restaurants shall we eat at, shall we go for drinks before we eat  and what wine shall we have.

We had a holiday in the DR a couple of years ago and it is without doubt the best AI we have had. The hotel, dining venues, beach, watersports ( at the time not sure now) were absolutely top notch. The only downside is it is nowhere near another resort ( by road) and even the hotel staff were shipped in by boat every morning. Having said that it was a fabulous holiday, especially if you like sailing, paddleboarding etc. As you say, value for money wise it far exceeds anything you can get in Europe.

"Since we talked recently on here about WOW factors I dug out some pics of a real WOWs Swimming with Dolphins. Never forget it as long as we live"

Might have been a WOW for you, herewith an extract from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)

"

Dolphins are torn away from their families in the wild—even babies, who typically stay with their mothers for three to six years.

In the wild, dolphins swim up to 60 miles each day, but in captivity, they’re confined to chemically treated concrete pools. This is especially traumatic for them since they communicate through sonar."

Here's another quote from the same organisation.

"We at PETA very much love the animal companions who share our homes, but we believe that it would have been in the animals’ best interests if the institution of “pet keeping”—i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as “pets”—never existed..........This selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering, which results from manipulating their breeding, selling or giving them away casually, and depriving them of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. They are restricted to human homes, where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to."

Make of it what you will.

PETA are considered on the extreme of campaigning for animals, and tend to be well known for their often explicit and shocking tactics, but nevertheless do serve a purpose in terms of educating about some of the suffering non human species endure at the hands of Man.
This is an informed study about why the exploitation of sea mammals isn’t good for them.

I could happily watch and swim with them in the open sea, but would rather roast in hell than do it in a tank with such intelligent captive creatures. 😢

Wow, some of you guys are extravagant !

We paid about £12 for a good clean room at the Maya hotel restaurant in Agra. Breakfast on their rooftop and then a bicycle rickshaw to the Taj Mahal.

Some people make the World a better place for all creatures some just do it for themselves selfishly. Well said Rufs, it’s a disgusting self centred need & should be banned, it will be in the future like the Circus animals have👍🏻

It’s known as “dolphin prostitution” in some ethical circles. While ever folks do it, the market for capturing them and keeping them to perform and make money out of will mean the trade continues☹️

"I could happily watch and swim with them in the open sea,"

yes and that was my first encounter with Dolphins off shore Indonesia, was doing some work in AUS had 4 weeks hols owed so joined a conservation group.

for sure there are lots of things we do that are not right when it comes fo e.g. our pets, I hate to see dogs or cats that are treated as fashion excessories, but unfortunately it is the way of the world, as for dogs, as a family we always take in rescue dogs, we currently have 2 in Spain 1 of which was rescued from Kuwiat and 4 here in the UK, makes us feel a little bit better about the whole situation.laughing

Makes for very expensive staycations or vacations, although, when touring in the UK we always take pooch and normally overthere if we take the caravan.
