Hi there, I am at the end of a year tour of Europe currently on a campsite outside of Paris. I intend to go home to Ireland via either Cherbourg to Dublin or Roscoff to Rosslare. Has anyone had any experience of the Ferries on those routes and there suitability for our rig which is an Adria Altea Avon and Nissan Navarra approx. 13.8m long. It would be great if we could drive on and off without having to reverse at any point. I called the ferries but have found it difficult to get relevant answers.

Thanks for your time.

The two Brittany Ferries ships which sail from Roscoff to Ireland are the same ones (Pont Aven and Armorique) which come across to Plymouth and I have used them both countless times. The main vehicle decks are cavernous and will easily accommodate your outfit- you will be guided in alongside large HGVs which will dwarf you. But I believe they sail to Cork rather than Rosslare - it’s the quickest route back from France to Ireland and takes about 12 hours.

Nine times out of ten you will drive straight through the ship - in one end and out the other end on arrival. But very occasionally there is a technical problem and if the bow doors won’t open you might have to do a U turn on board to get out. It is rare.

I don’t know tne Irish Ferries from Cherbourg but imagine they will be just the same, but take longer.

As Eurotraveller has said, the Brittany Ferries boats will take your rig without any trouble, and it is very  very rare not to be able to drive on and off without any reversing. If that was a posisbility then the loading crew will ensure you can do a round turn on boarding wihthout  any reversing .

Thanks for your help, we travelled on a ferry from Barcelona to Genoa during the gap year and had to turn around on the ship when getting to Genoa port. It was stress full as it was very tight and a lot of impatient truck drivers, so we thought we would try to avoid this time. Thanks again, I think we will go with Brittany.
