Touring Italy for 3 months

Sites will be starting to close in a few weeks time so better leave it till next Spring. Get a load of guidebooks for all those countries to read over the winter and decide on the places you would like to visit. And for choosing sites get the latest ACSI camping card and app when it’s available at Christmas. Good luck - it could be a wonderful trip.

last time I went to Italy (2017) I went through France into Switzerland but the tolls were really expensive.  I think the French tolls came to about £98 whilst the Swiss vignettes for car and caravan was £64.  Tolls in Italy were next to nothing.  As I was travelling solo and my time was limited I catnapped in various service stations

As I already had a valid Swiss vignette (valid for a year) I returned through Switzerland and then entered Germany stopping in the Black Forest before travelling North.  

You will find lots of campsites open in Germany, Switzerland due to the skiing season which is often high season with prices to match

We have done a couple of longish trips to Italy, although in May/June time. Depending on how long you want to stay in places you could probably get further than we managed. I have a couple of Blogs of our two main trips to Italy below which might give you a flavour of the route and stops we made. Although we now have a motorhome, both trips were done when we had a caravan.

It really depends on when you plan to go and what you’re interests are. Driving through France directly into Italy can be quite expensive (Frejus and MB tunnels) and in my opinion a little boring, although you will eat up te miles on the French motorways. The countries you mention are all very big and once again it depends on what you’re looking for. We’ve never been taken with the Black Forest and prefer the Romantc Strasse and Bavaria which is beautiful. If you’ve never been to Italy before then Venice is a must, as is Bologna and the Quinquennial Terra in our opinion. The north Adriatic coast climate is ideal for a relaxing beach holiday but August is very busy in Italy and many parts of France. If you go in May/June/July then it will not be so busy (apart from during Pfingsten, the German equivalent to Whitsun) and the temperatures are generally not so hot although in July this year we had temperatures in the low 40s for about 10 days on the north Adriatic coast. Let us know your preferences and there’s lots of advice awaiting.

Ps: if you go in May/June/July you will not have to pre-book sites. April can be cold in Northern Italy.
