I often get asked when is the best time to see the Dordogne which is of course a difficult question to answer.

My answer is almost always that if you are not restricted by school holidays or shut down period holidays then the best time is when the hordes of other holiday makers are no longer her.

For spectacular colours, purity of air but still with mostly warm to quite hot days then late September and right through October can be the best times of all to visit this spellbinding area.  It is at this time of year when the quite densely forested Eastern Dordogne takes on a totally different visual aspect, presenting an irresistible tapestry of brilliant colours through which you can drive, walk or cycle far away from the madding crowd.

Most of the visitor attractions are still open so you will never be wanting for places to visit or things to do, but the bonus being that you will be able to take your time in a far more relaxing fashion.

With the changes to the weather influencing jet stream, the earlier parts of the year can be quite unsettled as many have experienced this year alone, in contrast autumnal visits to this magical area quite often bask in a far more balanced climate with day after day of clear blue skies.
