Temperature in Tuscany

Have relatives living there and yes it's hot, central Tuscany is hotter than the coast, Florence is always the hottest. Were you here during out heatwave? it will be like that, only it won't be over in a few days.

We visited the are in 2003, our first year with a caravan. Temperatures hit 43-45c for a week. It was unbearable, so we headed north for the lakes.

Thanks, no we have been in Italy for a few weeks and didn't experience the UK heatwave.   It's been 35 at Lake Garda.   We are just wondering whether we can cope with 38/39 as it basically means the only thing you can manage is hanging out in the pool! 

Yes indeed, and of course houses and buildings will have AC to ease things out a bit. The coast should be about that temperature, Florence was 38 yesterday.

We’re on the north Adriatic coast and for 10 or so days it was in the low 40s in the afternoons (similar to early August last year). However, it’s cooled down to its normal late July/August figures of mid 30s in the afternoons now.

Air Con is a must for us when the temperatures are that high and our unit was running 24/7 for 10 days. If you’ve not been to Tuscany it would be a pity to cancel, its such a beautiful area but visiting cities is a no no in that heat.

We recently returned from a trip that included Lago Trasiemno and Garda.

At Trasimeno it was round 34c most of the time and we of course felt hot. but it was bearable.

When we got to Garda it was 34-38c and felt much more oppressive-we still enjoyed our time but it did restrict what we did and took a little gloss of the stay.

This was in late June so told ourselves it was just because we were later than usual however, at our usual time of visiting, mid May-June, we have had a spell of 38c every day so going earlier didn't work that time!

As a result we are now looking at going to Portugal & Spain in April next year, a good month earlier than usual.

Generally sites in areas that are normally very hot in summer have full shade. Coming back from southern France in June it was well over 30 deg. C. all the way to just short of Calais and we realised the importance of shade. None of the “transit” sites were well shaded and we often had to drive around the site looking for trees and working out which direction the sun would be in. Of course, the early arrivals had taken all the shady pitches. Just another thing to work out when pitching along with, is it level, how far is the toilet block, where is the nearest hook-up point, etc.

This made me smile as I read a post yesterday about a site in Portugal. The poster said that on arrival looked very promising, but factor in requirements such as shade, size, slope, surface and you have little choice!

For transit sites we just take what’s offers unless when we hugest to it it’s totally unacceptable.

Trasimeno had great shade from app 0830 on, Garda only till 1030 then again from  half 4 ish, or as it’s known to us “Spritz O Clock”!
