Pre-paid/credit card for toll roads/aires - France

We have a trip to France planned and would welcome some recommendations on the best way to pay for toll roads and some of the aires where you have to pay.  Last year I tried to use my Visa but it wouldnt accept the card. I found the peages a little traumatic now that they are automated, they are all different and trying to find out where the money goes in and come out was a little confusing!
