Passport applications

We have just realised that our passports expired on 23rd December so we have to renew so that we can continue our annual visits to Europe. Has anyone experienced recently the new provisions for photographs? We had ours done and fortunately I used the Post Office with their "check & send" service. I was told that my eyes were just within the limits of their test chart and may be rejected, but, wait for this!!! my wifes face had changed! After 10 years and now having grey hair, not dark, I really am not surprised. The cashier was very sympathetic but said that my wifes may also be rejected. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what remedy did they have? It makes you wonder if there is any point in bothering at our age as it appears they might be worried if we leave the country and never come back!
