Hi everyone. We're travelling from Sunderland to get on the midnight ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe in Sept.

Does anyone know a good place for us to pull in to await ferry as we'll probably get there a few hours beforehand.

Many thanks

I can appreciate your logic in posting in the Overseas Section but your question relates to this side of the water; hence your post has been moved into the UK Sites and Touring Section.

You can get a meal at the Hope Inn on the west quay at Newhaven, but phone ahead to ask about parking there with a caravan while you eat. Otherwise it’s line up at the check ins at the port - the previous ferry will have gone at 1700.

Having done this journey from North Yorkshire last year - there are a few options for you depending on what route you use to get down to Newhaven..... of course these are our view and appreciate they may not apply for you.

We used the M23/A23 and where they join (just south of Gatwick Airport) there are the Pease Pottage Services where you can stop free of charge for a maximum of 2 hours.  Whilst the operation is small you can get something to eat (Burger King /MacDonalds) and the journey down to Newhaven was I think about another 45 minutes.

The second option would be the Hickstead Services also on the A23 but nearer to Brighton which are really a Starbucks, Shell Service Station and a Travelodge / Premier  Inn Hotel - you can pull in here by the side of the petrol station which has no parking restrictions but space is tight.  There were no apparent restrictions in the hotel / Starbucks parking (no signs saying "pay or be fined" but that may have changed by now.

The third option would be in Newhaven itself - as you get to the port there is a large industrial estate to the right before you get to the final roundabout before the entrance to the port.  There were bags of large forecourts there where you could pull in - I cannot remember the names but Screwfix, B&Q type of supermarkets.

I remember the queue for the boat was very very long and the wait was equally tedious so as the previous comment says - getting into the queue early is not a bad idea.  But if you have not eaten before - take something with you as there are no facilities at the port.

Hope this helps and have a great holiday!
