Overnight at Dover ferry terminal

We have an early morning crossing to Calais & would like to know if it's possible to stay overnight at Dover ferry terminal. Not booked a return ferry how easy is it to book from France or is it possible just to turn up at Calais. We are travelling late May possibly until July.
