New French speed traps

Noticed in a local French paper today that Le Plod are introducing a new speed trap system, An unmarked car (but carrying a uniformed  officer) is fitted with a front mounted radar and camera. The car cruises around, and when the radar is triggered by an overtaking motorist, the camera takes a picture, adding speed, time/date and GPS location. There is no flash and no stopping of vehicles, the offender receives an 'amend' in the post a few days later. Because the technology is new, they are going for excessive speed rather than close calls. In a 50K limit, the device will only fire above 61K, and in a 90K limit, it will fire at 106K. Don't know how they will use this system if a non French vehicle is caught speeding.

They will bring this in around Toulouse in April, with a gradual roll out in quite a few departements.
