Motorhome Calais to Salzburg

I suggest two stops for sightseeing at Maastricht and Wurzburg, then vary things on your way back.

Stops will depend on what time you arrive in France.  I live within 2 1/2hrs travelling time of Eurotunnel, so in summer, I get a mid afternoon crossing so I can do another 2-3 hours driving on the other side of the Channel.

Going to Austria, I would opt for toll-free travel through Belgium and refuel in Luxembourg where prices are much lower.  Then onwards via the German autobahn network, heading for Munich.  Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber is worth a diversion - it's a medieval time capsule and has a number of Stellplatz (aires) just outside the city walls.

If you are planning to do much travelling on motorways in Austria, you will either need a vignette or a Go-Box if you are over 3,500kg GVW. More info is available from the Asfinag website.

Agree with JimE re the route but from Luxemburg try to avoid the A8 through Stuttgart towards Munich, the roadworks on the A8 are horrendous at the moment. Better to go via Heidelberg or Wurzburg and visit Rothenburg o d T on the way as advised above, there are other beautiful villages along the Romantik Strasse too. There’s an excellent motorhome Aire in Remich, on the Mosel as good as any CMC site with electric and water on each pitch for 15 Euro per night.

Via Michelin is good for route planning.If you have a Sat Nav on board despite being excellent for main route directions (mine is based on a Garmin device) I invariably have to resort to using Google Maps for the location of Aires/Stellplatz etc. 

Just a thought Craig. Do you have the Campercontact app? Its the only app necessary for sites and motorhome stopovers in Europe. Don’t make ridged plans but look for a few site options and stop when you’ve had enough of driving for the day.

Dave's mention of Heidelberg reminds me of a stay we had 5 miles outside the city at Campingplatz an der Friedensbrücke. 

It's right on the banks of the River Neckar within walking distance of a few bars and restaurants, plus there are REWE, Aldi and Lidl supermarkets over the river bridge.  We caught the train into Heidelburg from Neckargemünd station (about 3/4 mile away) and returned on a river cruise which drops you off 200 metres from the site.

I see the two Salzburg sites have disappeared from this year's ACSI book. 

Sounds to me that they were both fed up with paying thousands of euros to ACSI, but one site wouldn’t drop out alone for fear of losing business to the other one -  - so they have a gentleman’s agreement that they will both drop out together.
