How easy is pet travel

Your dog needs microchip, rabies injection and Animal Health certificate - all at specified times from UK vet before you go.

Then needs worming treatment at specified time from European vet before you come back.

Procedures are straightforward, costs can be high.

We recently did France (ex Leeds) with 2 dogs. 

We used the dedicated AHC service at Abbeywell Vets in Folkestone en-route via Tunnel at £99 + £30 = £129 for our two dogs. 

They are about the cheapest and most experienced provider in the UK and we were very pleased. 

They have a comprehensive website with details. You apply on line with copy docs / Rabies details prior for pre- checking. 

Regardless you will need to visit the AHC issuing Vet to confirm corresponding microchip number is correct.

The listing at top to European vets is handy for return tapeworm which also needs formally recording on the AHC. 

NB Because of yet more increased hassle & cost we & lots of folk we know are re-considering EU travels generally and also without their dogs because of AHC needs.

It is still relatively straight forward but more expensive. Our vet charged £105 to issue an Animal Health certificate which is valid only for up to ten days to enter the EU and for four months for onward travel within the EU and return to the UK.

Unlike the pet passport it cannot be re used. Our dog was both chipped and rabies vacced prior to the visit to get his AHC. It is a ridiculously long and complex form for the vet to complete.

Ensure the EU vet on return giving the tapeworm treatment is diligent when they complete their bit. Our French vet wasn't and had I not been quite insistent with her we could have encountered issues at Eurotunnel on the way home.
