 Your first nights stop depends on where you're crossing the Channel. The municipal site at Metz is always good for an overnight stop but not so convenient if your crossing is into Holland.

An alternative plan would be to use the Camper Contact app on your phone and click on "Campsites" about 30 minutes before you plan to stop for the night. The app will give you a selection of sites with a list of facilities to choose from. For an overnight stop your choice of a site is not so critical. Regarding your route, this too depends on where you start from but Calais, Metz, Stuttgart, Ulm, then either Munich or Fussen and Innsbruck (via the Fern Pass) are the ones we use on a regular basis. 

We could either go from Harwich or Dover as there is not much difference in miles to either from where we live so will have a look at what has been suggested so far with himself to see what he thinks! Half the fun is in the planning and looking forward to being back in Europe again

If you have not been to Austria before you will love it. We have been many times to Austria but mainly as a transit to Italy. However in 2016 we spend several weeks touring in Austria and really enjoyed it. 

As to getting to that region of Austria we tend to go down through France to Chalons and then out to Metz where we soon after join the German Autobahn system. For the Salzburg region you have two choices. The Fern Pass and the Inntel motorway to Salzburg or via Munich and then onto Salzburg which is a slightly easier route. As to stops en route it depends on how far you wish to travel each day. On my website here I have lots of site reviews of sites some of them would be suitable as stopover points.

Stonehenge, would agree with the recommendations given earlier by AD, as we have used the same sites, also en route to Croatia.

Another site which is really handy for your second halt would be Lech Camping (bookable through the club) if you find you want to travel another hour past Camping Waldpark on the A8.

It's very easy to find, pleasant site with probably the most powerful showers you'll encounter and a good restaurant too. Supermarket across the road and a fuel station just 200 yds further up past the site, where you can fill up much cheaper than on the A8

I am looking to do a similar trip to Salzburg from Calais with Motorhome with one or 2 stops on way down / return. How did you get on? Any recommendations?
