Genoa- Sicily ferry crossings

Has anyone done the Genoa - Sicily ferry crossing with a car and caravan. I would like an idea of costings and when would be the best time to book to get a good price?

Also would it be better to go in the Spring or the Autumn and does anyone know of any nice quiet sites on the island. 

Also any general info on caravanning in Sicily.
