From Calais to San Marino...

We will be touring Greece next September with another well known club as our first choice of Transylvania was fully booked!

The tour starts in the 'Most Serene Republic of San Marino' which is completely landlocked by Italy but only 7 miles from Rimini on the Adriatic coast.

Time is not an issue for us and we prefer to drive at a more sedate pace and stop at interesting places en-route rather than hammer down the toll roads.

While we do try to avoid tolls where possible but it is not always practical and can add many additional and often difficult mles to a journey.

I have looked at routes through Germany, crossing the Alps in Austria, or through France via Switzerland and through Mont Blanc tunnel. Alternatively via Briançon and the pass at Montgenévre.

Our motorhome has a GVW of 4250kg and therefore does not qualify for a vignette in either Switzerland or Austria. Austrai looks to be a nightmare with its 'GO-Box' but Switzerland more manageable

I would be grateful for any advice or reccommendations for our trip, and particularly about the 10 day Swiss 'heavy vehicle tax' carnet and how and when you must specify which days you will use it.

TIA
