David, it seems the dongle is unlocked so any one year contract with a major player will do the job, or it's buying a chunk of data that will last till it runs out, which is what I think you're looking for? Do you know how much data you'll need?

here's a few choices on Amazon, no doubt available elsewhere, even locally?

I haven't checked but a few hours ago I thought I heard an ad from O2 saying no roaming charges.

That was certainly the case last year, although there was a limit of 15GB I think. Similarly my BT sim using EE had no charges, although EE themselves were charging a daily rate at the time. It’s a bit of a minefield to be honest and it does pay to read the fine print if upgrading. BT tried to convince me I would be better off with a slightly cheaper EE branded sim, which would have incurred a roaming charge.

I was doing a bit of checking this week....

my Vodafone sims both have roaming included and both give 25gb allowance in Europe.

EE requires a 'bolt on' to give you your uk allowance when away, however there's a limit of 50gb per sim.

RWG mentioned by CY has a few takers on our 'brand forum'....

I think I may have found an alternative  to Smarty in a Lebara deal but it taken quite a bit of time I think they  deliberately complicate the T&Cs to make comparisons as hard as possible.

David I had Lebara last year then changed to Smarty both work well in Spain, Portugal and France.

OH now has Lebara, this is on our phones of course. OH gets 15gb over there and I get 12gb.

We have  Huawei mifi which is unlocked and currently have a 3 sim in it. It was valid for 24mths and cost £42 they are now around £32 for the same.
