Czech Republic and Germany.

Camping Praha, Klanovice, Prague.

We stayed for 7 nights in September 2012 at this small site (55 touring pitches); it does have holiday homes, on the outskirts of Prague. On arrival at reception we were greeted by pleasant and friendly staff who explained where everything was and gave us an information pack. They explained the location of local shops, garage, and options for bus and train services to Prague. Explanations were given on the types of ticket to buy which could be purchased at reception, which also sold bread, milk and a small range of essential items. The bus stop is a 100yards from the site gate, 5 minutes to train station, then catch the train and into the Centre of Prague within half an hour and very cheap fares. To the rear is a large forest with some small shops in the town, a larger Lidl supermarket is about 2 miles further down the road.

The site is clean, plenty of water taps, 16 amp hook-ups with excellent clean toilet, wash, shower facilities and kept clean through out the day. Also there is a good sized swimming pool and a smaller children’s pool. From the site a path leads into the forest with way marked walks and cycle tracks and easy to get lost, by taking wrong turns! but after 11 miles cycling, we found the bar! The restaurant is good and worth a visit and also the small bar near the pool, try the Klanovice burger with a large glass of Czech beer.

We had a very enjoyable stay, with two visits into Prague and it’s many attractions and cycling on the country lanes and in the forest; also for those who may be interested, it is an hours drive to the famous car factory and museum; Škoda. Yes, I took my Octavia back to its birthplace.

At the end of our stayed we paid with our Camping Cheque Gold Card and received a free bottle of Czech wine with compliments.

From Yorkshire, a good 1,032 mile drive, with an overnight stop in Germany.

Then on to our next site, a 309 mile drive to:

Azur Camping, Wertheim, Germany.

Azur Camping is a large site on the banks of the River Main, we had booked in for 6 nights. A German couple did save us a premium riverside pitch, supplement to pay on top of the Camping Cheque price. Again the site was good, however shower facilities not as good as Praha, but acceptable and with 6 amp hook ups. The old small town is just down the road with a large supermarket, but the attraction of the area is the cycle tracks alongside the rivers and countryside.

Our German friends had arranged some cycle rides alongside the Rivers Main and Tauber. One followed the River Main (east) to Markt-Heidenfeld and we came back the same way, 32 miles, The next two included taking the cycles on the train. The first up the Tauber valley to Lauda and cycled back down the 30 miles, the other to Miltenberg on the Main (West) and cycled back, another 30 miles. The trains accept cycles with designated areas inside and the prices are very cheap. And of course the cycle paths are very good and well signed. We did have plenty of refreshment stops in some very nice cafes and yes, the beer was very refreshing! The town of Wertheim is very nice with old half timbered buildings and a nice market place with a castle over looking the confluence of the two rivers. With our pitch on the river bank, we were close to the passing river barges and large cruise boats, which were going up and down the river.

Another enjoyable stay in a good location, then time to go home and catch the ferry at Dunkirk with another over night stop in Belgium.

Total mileage 2,155 we used our cycles a lot.

Diesel cost £370.00

Average 34mpg but at one point between Kassel and Prague 318 miles, I did fill up with Ultimate diesel and got 37mpg! Figures were taken from the cars trip computer.

Škoda Octavia Estate 2.0TDi 4x4 and Sprite Alpine 4.

We used Camping Cheques on both sites and got free booking with no deposit using the Gold Card, at Azur Camping, a 5 Euro pitch supplement was paid on top of the Camping Cheque per night.
