Croatia route and stopovers

We've spent the morning poring over maps trying to decide a good route and stopovers from Calais to Split/Dubrovnik for approx 4 weeks in June. We would be glad of some suggestions from those who have already done a similar trip or trips themselves. I should add that in Sept 2017 we set off to do just this and got down to Salzburg on the third night only to see that the weather for the next week or two was going to be shockingly wet at our destination near Rovinj and so we diverted to the south of France and enjoyed the sun instead before coming home. So now retired and having more time we want to have another attempt but can go further down the coast this time and for longer. The other change is that having moved from the Midlands to Somerset, the timings will be different as we plan to be through the tunnel breakfast time instead of early afternoon. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I have made two trips to Split in a motorhome. The first was through Germany, Austria and Solvenia, the second via Germany, Austria and Italy. I recorded the latter on >Polarsteps< but note this was in a motorhome. While you may like to use the route the stopovers cannot be used by a caravan and neither can the old Brenner Pass. You would have to use the toll route after the Fern Pass through Austria and then the new Brenner Pass.

I've done it a few times now (towing 8' wide van) My preferred route, assuming Calais as a starting point is to stop at Prumtal Camping, Oberweiss (entering Germany from Vianden, Luxembourg) Then to Lech Camping just north of Augsburg. Stop 3 near Villach, Austria (numerous sites, my choice is Terranseecamping Ossiacher See) Then day 4 into northern Croatia (which is as far as I've been) Probably the cheapest route and 250-300 miles per day was enough for me.

Also been over the Ferne Pass to Innsbruck, then Brenner Pass into Italy and Trieste, which was spectacular. However, I would still choose my first option.

Hi, Looking at your OP you will need to be on the road very early to be through the tunnel by breakfast time! The journey distances look about the same, but of course any trip to the SE can be subject to traffic issues.

As AD says the roadworks in Germany, last year, were absolutely on a scale that, for us at least, was unimaginable.

There are very long stretches where the signs indicate that caravans cannot use the outside lane however, we found ourselves 'trapped' in the at lane as it was impossible to pull back in and decided to just do what the locals do, non of who were using the inside lane.

We have used the route via the Fern & Reischa passes, to get to Lake Garda, and would do so again but would not bother with the Brenner having done it last year for the first time.
