After staying on two excellent CL sites recently, I was wondering whether members generally pay CL owners a tip on top of site fees. Both CLs were so good I felt that they deserved an overpayment, but I would like to know if this is the norm or an exception for members using CLs

Tipping(or the thought of it) also frightens some folk tooLaughingLaughing. Now if it was-'CL sites do you Harumph?' then this thread would rival Sunday departuresHappy

Sure, if they are good and helpful to you then give them a bottle of wine, or some flowers for the lady, or some sweeties for their kids. Be generous.

No ... if your enjoy your stay and the CL is like described on in the handbook and web then I leave a good review and if I meet the owner I thank them , also of course leave the pitch how I would expect to find it ......

We don't tip anyone.......cannot understand why some trades appear to expect an additional payment while others do not.

We pay the advertised price and would always expect good service. If we don't get it, we don't use them again. Simple.

Never thought of leaving a tip for CL owners. We give them days and weeks of repeat business, a good review and recommendation to others, which is priceless in terms of easy marketing! Have bought flowers and a bottle for those owners who down the years have become almost friends. Nothing but praise for CL owners Happy

We always tip or overpay without asking for change. Alternatively we buy a spray or flowers for the owners wife or leave a box of chocolates. It is simple courtesy which is well received & appreciated

We've just got back from a CL and after paying but before leaving I enquired if the owners required any additional payment for us having the electric heaters on nearly permanently since arrival. The offer was declined but apprecaited

Write your comments here...

Its lovely when you get a phone call from a new customer who has received a recommendation to visit your CL from another tourer during their travels, possibly worth more than any CL of the year competition.

We don't tip but as one of our regular sites provides postcards with site details and pictures we have one permanently on display in our car. Quite a few people have taken the site details.......

...might be why we can never get on in the summer. Frown

I doubt whether most CL owners are in it for the money!  In many cases it provides a modest income after expenses. Their time for maintenance, bookings, hospitality probably isn't even recovering the National Minimum Wage. I know that many CL owners do it for the good of their fellow mankind. Yes, that right, there are a lot of people in this game who actually enjoy what they do, providing us with lovely surroundings in which to stay a while. No doubt there is a small minority of exceptional people in all walks of life - we've met the occasional one over the years. As for tipping? I think most CL owners would like a bit of recognition for their effort, and respect for the place is a good start. Compliments are important to some people. A return visit or a personal recommendation is probably the best compliment. Sermon over.
