Campsite costs

Is anyone else finding sites really expensive?

No hook up and a minimal toilet block seem to be £20. They were not always this price, were they?

We know that CL owners have suffered over the last couple of years and are feeling the effects of inflation as we all are so we're not surprised that basic prices are rising.  However more of the owners are starting to add extras such as for children, an awning, a dog, an extra car etc. One site we looked at had a basic price of £19,  After adding extras the cost rose to £30 (£5 for our daughter, £4 for an awning and £2 for our tow car which is classed as an extra vehicle). Needless to say we won't be going there. This is becoming increasingly common and makes it more difficult to find a basic CL at a reasonable price. The owners are starting to price themselves out of the market so why don't they have a straightforward price without the extras? All we want is value for money.

I can see the point in charging extra for additional adults, possibly even children, but an extra charge for awnings puts us right off.

And as for charging for the towcar!!     How does one get a caravan there without a towcar ?

It seems to me that we have two types of CL customers emerging. The traditional ones, where value for money is important and a new variety who want the facilities of a big campsite but prefer the intimacy of a CL and are willing to pay an enhanced rate. You only have to look at Facebook to see how popular some of these latter sites are. Ted of Cholsey Grange CL has made the point that people shouldn't expect a well spec'd CL to be a lot cheaper than a comparable campsite. No doubt the argument would be that creating that level of facilities for 5 pitches is more expensive per pitch than a larger site? We have just stayed at Overwater Marina which was £20 a night, the only difference I could see between staying on their main campsite for £25 a night was a larger hardstanding and serviced pitches. This CL was pretty popular whilst we were there and I thought £20 a night was perfectly reasonable.

You must have been under charged. Price on the app says 14/04/2022 £21. Hope you are going to give them the £1 per night that you owe them.

Just read some interesting reviews of a nice looking CL that has EHU metered charges. Most folks were fine with the daily allowance, but one reviewer had a bit of a wake-up call to find they had an extra amount to pay at the end of their stay. CL makes a very reasonable £17.50 per night charge, including a set amount of usage each day, then extra charges above. Seems very fair to me, you pay extra if you want to use extra. (It was a big van, heating on throughout)

There will be numerous members who will leave reviews such as that, if sites go down the metering road ,,whereas at this time we have the attitude of "I have paid for it so I can use as much as I want"surprised brigade

£20 a night was the price when I booked (January 2022) and rather unusually this CL takes full payment on booking with the caveat that if you cancel 30 days, or more, before arrival you get a full refund and 14 days before you get 50% back which seems fair to me. I did notice that the price had edged up a little!

We just stayed on a site with new EHU meters. 10kWh included per pitch per night for £20. Any excess usage paid for at 29p/kWh. For 2 of us using heating, hot water, fridge and shower, we used 31kWh over the 4 nights we were there.

More than happy at that level of both cost and facility (6A hookup, water, CDP, bins, secure gate and a fantastic view).

It also gave us the choice to charge the car if we wanted to on site. Turns out we didn't need to, but we were safe in the knowledge we would be paying our way if we did.

2 weeks ago we were on a non-EHU site for £11 per night. Very well kept with picknic tables, fire pits & chimneys both with fuel, grey waste extension tubes, and portable solar panels with an inverter available to use if you needed. All in addition to CDP, recycling, water and a secure gate. Felt good value in todays terms.

Both those sites sound good value CTrees. Plenty of options, which I think is the best way forward personally. I had a look at the list of new CLs last night, they range from £12 with no hook up, right up to £25. Options for all preferences. I think HS provision will be the deal breaker for those who want to tap into the growth in MH/campervans.

Just browsing the other day and saw a CL priced from £30 per night 😲 their USP each pitch had its own private toilet.

Guess what so does my van, no thanks I'll pass on that.
