V70 to XC60 advice sought!

It's time to replace our 07 plate Volvo D5 V70 with an XC60. (Easier getting in and out) I obtained my present car from Volvo ex lease car auction. So with this in mind I will have a look at a selection of xc60's going through on a BCA Volvo auction on the 5th of Jan.

Has anyone got any advice on coming down from a D5 to a D4  on a suitable model capable of towing a van of 1500kg.

I moved from an XC60 D5  AWD Auto to a V60 Cross Country D4 AWD Auto last year.

Don't really notice any difference in performance ... in fact my new van is slightly heavier, though possibly more aerodynamic!

The Cross Country is slightly lighter which will no doubt help with performance solo.

Check out deals at Motorpoint.

Quite a few D5 2.4 ltr XC60 66/67 plates with less than 15k miles on for a good price. They are mostly EX Lease.

Also, some really good deals going on SE LUX Nav at the Volvo Selekt delaerships.  I was looking for the R Design Lux Nav, 2.4ltr, D5, but not a lot of them about but if you want the SE LuX Nav, there is lots of choice and very good value for money.

PS, if purchasing with towing in mind, id go for the extra BHP with the D5, rather than the D4, . If not towing, D4 would be more than adequate. Thats just me though, so each to thier own.

Volvo has completely changed the designation of the D5/4/3/2 engines.

the D5 engine in the V70 from 2007 had less power and torque than the D4 engines of today, which are still 5cylinder engines. The XC60 P3 (2008 onwards) is light years better than the V70 P2 (up to 2008). I have a V70 P3 with the same engine and it is a great tow car with loads of power.

As obbernockle states Volvo have completely changed their engine designations, indeed they even change the specs during each of the 3 phases, so it isn't as straight forward as you would imagine comparing a D4 & D5 car!  If you're looking at a later car, you won't find that much difference from your 2007 D5  compared to a later D4, and I suspect the later D4 will be more powerful in terms of BHP & Torque than your current D5.

I've just changed from a March 2012 V70 R-design D5 215BHP to a Dec 2014 XC70 D4 181BHP, purely for the same reason as you are looking to change, and can honestly say the XC70 pulls our van (1565Kg) just as well as the V70 did.

I wouldn't get to tied up with the BHP figures though, as when towing I always believe torque more important, and that's probably why I don't notice much difference between the V70 & XC70, the V70 had 440Nm where as the XC70 has 420Nm.

More BHP and More Torque is bound to be better for towing, so if you are towing, you better go for the higher numbers in both if you have a choice to make.

I don't think you should get tied up in BHP alone, no more than you would get tied up in Torque on its own, but a higher number on both WILL be better if you are towing.

As i said though, each to thier own.

I think Volvo really confuse people as they use the D4 badge on a couple of engines ... my D4 is the 2.4, with 190 bhp and 310 ft of torque while others are 2.0 litres with 180bhp and 295 ft of torque.

As I said before I don't notice any difference between my 2014 XC 60 D5 and my 2017 V60 Cross Country D4 AWD, but only down 15 ft of torque ... admittedly I am short 30bhp but genuinely have not noticed .... but the V60 is not so tall and a bit lighter which probably helps.
