Towing with a 1.8 Freelander

As the title implies does anyone else tow with a 1.8 Freelander, I am currently towing a Coachman VIP420/2 with a 2001 Freelander,whilst it tows it OK it is rather thirsty when doing so last week on my trip to Whitby going there I got 17mpg and coming home 20mpg. The CC car matching rates it as being slightly under powered but it also says that of the diesels. So if you do tow with a petrol 1.8 I would love to hear how you rate the car.
