towing mirrors - necessary evil?

Am I the only one who finds towing mirrors a pain in the proverbial?  There you are, all loaded and hitched, ready to get the next great adventure on the road, and er-in-doors spoils it all with, "haven't you forgotten something?"  The next ten to thirty minutes are wasted hunting the things, hooking/clamping/strapping them on and trying to adjust them. Once fitted, I for one find them more of a distraction than a help. I've lost count of the numbers I've counted in bits on the hard shoulder, and yet these things are a legal requirement.  I think I have an alternatvie. But first I'd like to hear your comments....
