Quick Cherish transfers to avoid extra plates?

I am in the process of changing my towcar and am being told it could take up to 4 weeks to transfer my cherished plate from my old car to my new (used) car. This will mean i will have to get extra plates for the caravan temporarily whilst towing with the new car on its old plates. Or does anyone know if there is a quick way of getting the transfer done, at a local DVLA office there and then? Most online postings on the topics seem to be from years gone by, before a lot of the DVLA processes seemed to change. Any help appreciated.
