more info is required to answer your question. what is the Mazda-petrol/diesel. 1.6/2.0/2.2 old/new. what is the van your towing. all this helps.

The clue is in the heading 'Petrol Alternatives' the van is a Bailey Olympus 464.

Reading the runes it looks very much as if the knives are well and truly out to ditch the diesel  whatever. Someone will no doubt re-address the problem of pollution and eventually decide that they are OK after all, but that will be after we have all gone elsewhere.

Nudging ever closer to my eighties I cannot see me investing massive amounts of cash into a new motor but there are petrol options out there at reasonable prices.

My existing diesel Mondeo, with 60,000 on the clock only commands a £3000 write off value at eight years old. You might as well burn the money!!!

I would stick with the Mondeo. why waste money getting a petrol and halving the mpg and costing more to run. give it a dam good service with cambelt change and good for another 60000 miles towing. If you don't mind me saying, I think your doing brilliant still towing at nearly 80 years old so why worry about being green at your time of life. stick with what you've got and enjoy. big thumbs up from me. laughing

another thing is the Mondeo if my guess is correct gives 77% towing match where the mazda petrol  is 20kg lighter than the caravan so illegal to tow. again guessing what year both vehicles are.

Keep the Mondeo. The biggest cost of car ownership by a huge margin is depreciation and whatever the ill informed politicians and Sunday papers say, diesel will be needed for a long time yet.

Just because a caravan weighs more than the tow vehicle it doesn’t neccessarily mean it is illegal to tow.  Depend on the maximum tow weight.

This is not a recommendation or do I think it is prudent but merely a comment on the legality of the situation.

Hi, Thanks for your views!

As it is I will have the Mondeo MOT'd this month anyway. By next year we will know a bit more about the new anti-diesel tests.

Can't imagine just how the market will deal with the rush to opt for petrol!

Regards to all!
