My car is due for first MOT and third service on 27 April. Garage is closed, booking cancelled.  Road tax is due 1st May, so I have tried to pay thye tax on line but it won't let me because I don't have an MOT.  The government has given six months grace on MOTs, but they don't seem to have told the DVSA.  I've tried all the phone numbers but it's impossible to speak to anyone.

Anybody else had the same problem?

Our tow car was due its first MOT and third service on the 31/04/20 and was duly booked in, then we had a call from the garage to say this had been cancelled but they would carry out the MOT & service at a later date with no problems with future warranty, of course the next problem was to tax the car but I thought you needed at least a month before the MOT was due to be able to tax the vehicle but with only a few days to go the other half went on line and taxed the car.

Normally .... as long as the car had an MOT for the date you were taxing it from, you can tax it eg MOT expired on the 2nd May & you were taxing it from the 1st May

Sorry wrong expiry date yell it should have been 31/03/20 and looking at gov.uk site it appears to have also been relaxed as it states

"An MOT or goods vehicle testing (GVT) certificate (if you need one) - it must be valid when the new tax starts"

Just an update to my original post. I have today successfully taxed the car.  The government  MOT database shows the car as having passed its MOT on 18 April, with next MOT due in October.  So, the system does work.

Same here, the MOT data base shows it was extended on the 16th April to October. Although I don't need to re tax until the end of May
