Is this because of the ugly rear end or the watering down of the Discovery name by putting it on the Freelander replacement......?

Yes a great shame.
We have had two, fantastic towing vehicles, and my parents have had 20 in the last 30 years (they live on a steep hillside in North Wales).
It's a shame for the brand and the workers. But I speak to few people who like the rear end styling. My dad is thinking of shopping elsewhere for his next car.
Lets hope Range Rover continues to go from strength to strength.

This is nothing to do with sales and all about releasing production space and capacity for the new models including the new Evoque due for launch soon. There was a suggestion at one stage the Slovakian factory will also be the home of the new Defender and given it may share some of the Discovery architecture that would make sense. There are also rumours of a new small Discovery model to sit under the Sport which would probably use a cut down Sport/Evoque platform.
