Can Owner/Driver Reviews Ever Be Objective?

I am just about to decide on a new tow-car a compact 4x4, new, diesel. I want good build quality, good reliability, performance and reasonable economy. I tend to keep away from anything Land Rover for personal reasons and want a change from Toyota.

Having scoured the media for reviews, particularly private owner/driver reviews they don't seem much use to me. 

They seem to fall into three categories, the individual who is basically pleased with his/her car and sees no faults in it at all, the individual who is angry because he or she bought a lemon and can see no good in it at all and the third party reviewer who knows someone who had problems with their car.

The first seems totally blinded by the wonderful new machine that no review ever contains even a minor criticism.

The second is so furious that they have to have a go at the manufacturer at all costs and can see no good in the vehicle at all.

The third (and the worst) is the person who has to tell of someone else's horror story but never tells of someone else's happy story and of course, has no actual personal experience at all.

My new one will probably be the new BMW X3, 3.0 xDrive SE. 

Any objective comments would be appreciated, preferably if you own or have owned one.
