Built-in Sat-Nav

Perhaps I had not researched the topic enough when I specified my new car, as I was already using a TomTom portable Sat-Nav. My brand new VW arrived in November 2010 with built-in Sat-Nav. The functionality was inferior to the old TomTom, only accepting the first 5 digits of the UK Postcode - but OK ish. Then in July 2011 I went on holiday, sailed to Bilbao and headed for the Pyrenees - the Sat nav told me I was 'off-road' for long periods especially across the French border, and at various other times during the holiday. I complained to VW that the maps were out of date, and they responded that the maps were the latest available at the time my car was built, but if I wanted a more up to date version, a DVD could be purchased from my local VW dealer for £200. There is no routine update facility (except for the £200 DVD). After paying through the nose for the 'built-in' version, I have decided to dust off the old TomTom and paid £58 for a year subscription for new European maps updated quarterly, plus the free updates in between - any comments?
