BMW X1 as a towcar

Looking to replace existing towcar, which is a 2017 Ford Kuga  2.0TDCi 150PS FWD with a kerb weight of 1614Kg and maximum torque of 370Nm, and need some advice please.

I tow a 2014 Bailey Unicorn II Vigo with an MTPLM of 1498Kg.

I'm looking at either the sDrive 20i SE which has a kerbweight of 1560Kg or the 4x4 xDrive20i SE with a kerbweight of 1645Kg. Both are petrol rather than diesel with max torque of 280Nm.

Does anyone have experience of towing a similar sized caravan with a BMW X1? What is the handling like and is there enough pulling power with the petrol engine?

There doesn't seem much difference, except the trailer nose weight is 100Kg on the Kuga and 80Kg on the BMW.

Thanks

I'm in agreement with cyber. the thing is with diesel is that the torque comes in at very low revs so better for setting of when towing where as the petrol will need plent of revs to hit the torque required to get going. TBH I would never tow with a petrol vehicle. Keep the Kuga or get the diesel X1.

On the Kuga the revs for maximum torque (370Nm) is 2000rpm, and on the petrol BMW (280Nm) it is 1350rpm so on paper it looks like I'll need less revs to get going

Well if your on a flat road all will be well but watch out when going up steep hills and you will wish you stuck with the kuga. At the end of the day it's your choice. you will also notice the difference in your pocket when towing with a petrol.
