Which satnav for towing?

There are Sat Navs on the market where you can enter your outfit length  and width bu none will always bg advise from e accurate ,it is far better taking the advise from the clubs and to follow the sites directories instructions for the routes to sites

That might be fine for the last 5 miles or so but what about the previous 95 miles? Personally, although I use a TomTom Start 60 and I am happy to do so I would never follow a satnav blindly. I prefer to look at a map if there are any route complications and to write out a list of roads and destination headings and ignore 'Thomasina's' Shortcuts She soon gets with the programme. Sometimes I use vias but often don't bother.

I also have a TomTom Start 60 but I have added the Camper Maps and it has rarely let me down. Unfortunately it's getting a bit long in the tooth now and in normal circumstances I would replace it with similar. However in my new motorhome I have a built in TomTom which is generally OK but is inclined to cut the odd corner. My reaction is to ignore any instruction I don't like the look of and it generally soon gets back on track. Both sat navs have the ability to view the destination which is handy if you want to check the approach to a Club site with the directory instructions. Its always a good idea to have a road atlas on the lap of your copilot!

Have a look at your route on Google Earth as can virtually drive the roads from your armchair. Will also give you quickest/shortest/easiest route but cannot take size into play.

I also have a TomTom Start 60

And was one of the reasons I chose that one and have been pleased with it. 

We have a Garman,  but as mentioned, I think it is best to follow site advice, and also plan your route with a road atlas aswell. Last year we went on a trip from Devon with stops in Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Norfolk. After looking on Google maps I realised that I would have to override the satnav for a stop in Ashby De La Zouch, as it wanted to take me through the town Centre. Street view is also good for driving particular parts of the route. I use it to check out caravan parking at motorway services. We have changed towcar now, and this one has a built in satnav, but I dont think it is as good as the Garman.

 

We do the same and plan the route any concerns we have a look at the road via streetview, we do own a tom tom live for motorhome & caravan but thats tried to take us down some narrow roads so we have given up with that.  

We have a Garmin and never check the route.  What I do is put the campsite instructions into my I-Pad for the last few miles and follow them.

There used to be a truckers sat nav for under £50 but for the life of me I can’t recall it’s name although here is a link for one under £100
