So our aon is reaching that age where we give him a little more latitude is going around the sites without us having eyes on him the whole time, HOWEVER, we have lost him a couple of times when he has been invited back to a new friends caravan and we lose sight of him. Therefore we are thinking Walkie Talkies might be a good idea. He is 7 ans wondered if anyone uses them and could suggest a good brand/model.

Many thanks

Reeves

If  you  should  decide  to  use  these  items  from  car  to  car  or  motorhome  PLEASE  remember  the  law  is  still  the  same  from  the  drivers  point  of  view  !!  I.E.  No  hand-held  use  if  you  are  behind  the  wheel  !!

Not true ..... https://www.gov.uk/using-mobile-phones-when-driving-the-law

Your  link  takes  me  to  the  relevant  gov.uk  page  MM  BUT  in  the  first  line  it  says  it  is  illegal  to  to  use  a  "hand  held  phone  or  similar  device"  when  driving,  riding  or  supervising  a  learner  driver.  That  is  my  point  is'nt  it  ??

We're talking about walkie talkies, not hand held PHONES .... ie in the LAST line 'You can use hands-free phones, sat navs and 2-way radios when you’re driving or riding.'

That's MY point and the law

Thats  Hands  Free  MM,  the  items  the  OP  was  asking  about  are  NOT  hands  free,  and  I  made  it  clear  what  I  was  talking  about  No  Hand  Held  Use  I  said  and  No  hand  Held  use  I  meant   !!

Navigateur,  Its  pretty  standard  for  Laws  to  be  drafted  in  the  most  ambiguous  way  possible,  that  leaves  it  to  the  courts  to  decide  what  Parliament  actually  meant  !

The OP is asking about walkie talkies which are 2 way radios and are allowed to be used while driving. Hands free phones are just mobile phones used via bluetooth etc

I, for one, would certainly not want to challenge it in court. However, in any event, you can still be prosecuted for not being in proper control of a motor vehicle, if using the device impacts on your driving. Same as you can if you fiddle with the sat nav or radio and stray from your lane.

You could be charged for driving without due care for any number of reasons.  But using a 2 way radio is perfectly legal as per the gov link

Simple answer is yes you may use hand held two way radios. Paragraph 4 of the The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 4) Regulations 2003 defines what hand held devices are and it specifically excludes two way radios.
However, and there is always in legislation a however, if using two way radios whilst driving you may well face a prosecution under section 104 of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 in that 'No person shall drive or cause or permit any other person to drive, a motor vehicle on a road if he is in such a position that he cannot have proper control of the vehicle...'
