We have been away for several months and the sink waste pipe is getting a bit smelly. Does anybody have any recommendations how to get rid of it without resorting to specific branded products which are probably not available abroad.

I had a problem with smelly waste pipes in my MH and I solved it by using bio washing machine liquid last thing at night.

i had read about bio washing machine liquid being used in cassette toilet waste tank instead of proprietary products like Aquachem and thought if it works there it should work in water waste tank and pipes.

i now use it about once a week while away.

Hi Aquila have had similar smells, try plugging up waste outlet outside and pouring coke down, leave overnight and flush in the morning as well as doing what Chris102 suggests. also an extended bottle brush pushed up from outside but make sure it can not come apart

Hi Chris102 and Morrisman,

I had thought of the bio method but never dreamed of using coke! I will try both methods.

Thank you

Quite often the smell comes from the waste water container, so give it a good clean out.

As well as the above suggestions, Thetford do a tank cleaner (different from the cassette cleaner) which is very effective, though not cheap.  A little down each plughole works wonders.  I would think it would be available abroad.

Coke brought out some horrible gunge from my waste pipes that a branded cleaner hadn't touched!  Amazing.

Another vote for the Thetford tank cleaner.

It ran out in France this year, so bought some disinfectant with a very strong perfume and degreaser, in a supermarket, which worked equally well and was half the price. Unfortunately I have not seen anything similar in this country.

Yes, ours ran out in Austria and we tried to find some nice smelling disinfectant but my German is limited so we were a bit stumped.

We did buy something that had a sort of vinegar smell and it proved reasonably effective, at least it seemed to neutralise the smell.

Pippah45, did you block the outlet hole so the Coke stayed in the pipe for a while?

Sorry I didn't post my results. I tried the coke solution and it worked very well. Some really disgusting smells and a lot of gunge came out the pipes. It was a problem finding something to block the oitlet with as the cap doesn't seal the end properly. I ended up with the handle od a kitchen whisk wrapped up in compostable food bag. Worked a treat. We left it the pipes overnight and listened to the gurgles all night!
