We've had the mirror clip varieties on our last three vans. Work very well and if not on works like a normal mirror (the screen has a mirrored finish). Good for those quick glimpses back into the hab end, or like us, if you have a rear window some view of road behind.. However, I'm told it is not legal but ours has a remote and you can switch between reverse mode or on all the time, the latter being the illegal bit. Silly I know but this is useful at times.

It's not illegal to have a camera / screen that gives a continuous view behind you - or anywhere for that matter - providing it's used solely to give information about the position of the vehicle / other vehicles on the road.  See Construction and Use Regs 1986, Reg 109(1).

If you want it solely for reversing then have a look at the one sold by Falcon Technology - doesn't need any wiring or drilling of the bodywork to fix it.  I have one - for continuous rear view purposes but it's not that brilliant for that because it's a very wide angle lens and gives a distorted view of vehicles behind.  Ideally, one used for that purpose should have a camera angle of 60 degrees or less (so I found out subsequently!).

It would, however, be fine for reversing purposes.

That was my view and still is but as I said I was told (by the manufacturers of my van) that it was illegal, they had to ensure it was in reverse mode only when leaving the factory. Doesn't make sense to me mind as in reality it's just a rear mirror view as would be seen normally.

I got the same guff from a caravan dealer in Bawtry when I asked about fitting one to my last van - which made me double-check the Con and Use Regs.  So obviously, they are both wrong.
