Good afternoon all

I have recently changed my solid tyre now key wheel for a pneumatic one on the advice of one of my friends, easier to manoeuvre over soft ground with a motor mover apparently. Tyre deflated on first outing when trying to move onto pitch. Does anyone have any advice on the best jockey wheels

thank you

just today replaced by old alko 1222435 with a new alko 1222435, caravan is a 2008 Coachman and this is only the 2nd jockey wheel, too many reports of inflatables running flat.

I ran an inflatable jockey wheel from 2007 to 2017. It would appear I was lucky in that I never had a deflation, but I did carry a mobility scooter inner tube just in case.

On my current van I use an Alko Premium Jockey Wheel. I ordered this as a factory build option, so it did not cost a lot more. The wider solid tyre resists digging into soft ground and I have the advantage of a nose weight gauge built in.

Builder. That is why I am not a fan of inflatable jockey wheel tyres!  I have used a solid one for many years and had no problems using a mover on a variety of surfaces.  On very soft surfaces I am told that it is better,  if possible, to use the mover in reverse although in my many years of caravanning I have never had to.

This has been discussed a few time down the years on here and the general consensus is that these inflatable wheels are more trouble than they are worth. Always had what came with the van and again no problems.

Not all pneumatic wheels are really suitable.

We have one sold by Alko with a max pressure of around 55 psi which I check before every trip and it has proved reliable with the mover.

Other we have triend before had psi around 30 which would deform during turning the wheel. The Alko is far more stable and has never let us down.

We've been caravanning for almost 40 years and had a variety of solid and pneumatic tyres on the jockey wheels. Some solid ones have proved difficult to move on chippings or soft ground and some pneumatic have burst so that they're useless. Haven't tried to use pneumatics with inner tubes as the hard plastic rims couldn't be sealed.

For the last 2 caravans, over a period of  6 years, I've swapped the standard Alko for a Kartt jockey wheel and had no problems whatsoever. They used to be on special offer through CAMC and I'd recommend them.
