Hook-Up Cable Wiring

I was just looking for some advice from anyone that has wired up a hook up cable. Recently while on on site, the power to my van went dead. I checked the hook up cable and noticed that one of the contacts in the plug that goes into the site supply was blackened. I used a spare cable for the rest of the holiday. I've bought a new plug to put onto the cable, but when I took off the old plug, I was surprised to find that the Blue cable (neutral) was into the contact labelled 'L\+', and the Brown cable was into the other contact which wasn't labelled. The Earth was into the contact marked Earth, so that was fine.

To me it looks like the cables should have been the other way around, i.e. Brown into the contact labelled 'L\+', and the Blue into the unmarked contact.

Has anyone any advice on this before I put the new plug on?

Thanks.

Keith.

You’re not alone on that one. I have two leads a long lead on a reel and a shorter one that I normally use. Although the lead was about four years old, I hadn’t needed to use it, as the shorter one normally was long enough. When I did I also discovered that one end had the line and neutral reversed.

Thanks for the responses. After doing a bit more digging online, I suspected that it may be a reverse polarity cable that I know you sometimes need on the continent. But I've just checked the other end of the cable at the female socket, and it is the same, the Brown goes into the Neutral contact and the Blue goes into the Live contact, so it's not reverse polarity. I guess as long as the cable colours match at each end, it will work ok, so this one is probably just down to whoever made up the cable getting their colours mixed up I suspect!

It would good idea to check the socket at the caravan end of the lead to see how that is wired, I away's carry one of those mains tester plugs in the van
