Licence up for renewal shortly at 70. Have motorhome under 3500kg but if I decide to tow a smart car will I need to have the upgraded licence? Sorry if this has been asked before but cannot seem to pick up a thread.

I think if you don't take a medical to keep your C1+E licence you will be down graded to B+E which means you can drive any vehicle upto 3.5 tons and tow a trailer up to 3.5 tons

if you search on the web, there is a lot of conflicting advice regarding towing when aged over 70yoa.

it also seems that the DVLA also seems to offer conflicting information on its own website. As roadside checks on drivers over 70 have been told they should not be towing, despite having grandfather rights.

I assume that the link given by Tracy123 has been vetted by CC's legal department, and is correct, as it is easy to find conflicting advice on other caravan  / Motorhomes sites.

i suggest printing out the link given by Tracy and carrying it with you, at least you have mitigating circumstances to fall back on (and a CC's legal opinion)

That is because people do not understand the difference between a B and a B1 or a C and a C1 licence. Check out the Government pages >here<

Write your comments here... peedee, you are correct, I recently gave up my C1 plus E license,  at my 70th, after having recently had heart surgery i didnt fancy having to have medicals every 3 years to keep the  C1 plus E.  I used to have a 4250kg M/Home, and towed our Yaris car behind it on an A-frame.

Have now downsized to a sub 3500kg Panel van conversion, But strangely, if i felt like towing a Caravan upto 3500kg.behind it,  I could, quite legally.

Yes it is a bit of a nonsense but I am guessing it is because we are in a transitional phase. Am I right in thinking anyone who took a car licence test after 1997 only gets category B1?

I am having medicals to keep my C1+E but lately having a few hicups with my health. Just hoping I can make one more 3 year stint and anything after that will be a bonus. I have thought about downsizing and it may come to that one day unless I give up. Cannot see me going back to a caravan although I still have a good tow car.
