First thing I will say....I know very little about electricity. I tried to check the state of my leisure battery today and was surprised that the tester wouldn't show any voltage.
The wires did get warm?
Can someone tell which setting to turn the gadget to? Looking at the dial, I used to turn it to the left side.
I thought I would keep the battery indoors in the warm during the winter.

Set the meter to DC volts (the one with the "V" and the straight line not the squiggle with is AC (alternating current or "Mains") .
For safety try this out on a low voltage battery e.g a AA out of a torch. . Put the red probe or on the positive + (red) post or end of battery and the (black) - probe on the negative. A good AA battery for example will record over 1.5 volts probably around 1.62.
Once you are confident with this you can set the voltmeter to 20v and try it on your actual leisure battery.

turn the dial counter clockwise to '20' for checking your 12v battery,
the red lead needs to be in the connection point above the black lead
for clock positions from 9 o'clock to12 o;clock on your meter is for measuring DC and for clock positions 12 o'clock to 1 o'clock is for measuring AC Voltage
